1960s Black Calendar Travel Alarm Clock by Elgin with Original Box and Papers

A sleek over-engineered little travel companion from the days when checking the date meant looking at a clock instead of a phone.

This vintage Elgin mechanical travel alarm features a rich black sunburst dial framed in gold-tone metal, luminous hands and hour markers, and separate windows displaying the month, day, and date. Fold it shut and the clock disappears into its textured black protective case. Open it again and the case becomes its own tabletop stand.

Even better, this example survives with its original green Elgin box and instruction/warranty paperwork, making it a much more complete example than the loose clocks that usually turn up.

The mechanical movement has been tested. The clock ticks, keeps time, and the alarm functions properly. The luminous hands and hour markers also respond strongly under UV light and continue glowing in darkness after being charged.

📚 Historical Context

Elgin started life in Illinois in 1864 as the National Watch Company, back when making a reliable timepiece meant machining a collection of tiny metal parts accurately enough that they could argue with gravity all day and still tell you when lunch started. The company became the Elgin National Watch Company in 1874 and grew into one of America's major watch manufacturers.

Then came the 1960s. American watchmaking was changing, imported movements were becoming increasingly important, and Elgin's century-old manufacturing operation was approaching the end of the road. U.S. manufacturing ceased in 1968, and the Elgin name continued under new ownership afterward.

And right in the middle of all that change came clocks like this.

A 1969 retail advertisement specifically offered an Elgin day/date/month travel clock for the desk or nightstand, measuring about 3½ by 3 inches. That period advertisement provides an unusually good anchor for dating this Japanese-made example to the late 1960s.

It was a surprisingly ambitious thing to stuff into a travel case. Time, alarm, month, weekday, date, luminous markers, and a mechanical movement, all packed into something small enough to disappear into a suitcase. No charging cable. No software update. Just springs, gears, little calendar drums, and a winding knob.

Fifty-plus years later, it is still doing the job.
