1960s Jerger Green Folding Travel Alarm Clock with Original Box
$82.00
A wonderfully compact piece of mid-century travel design, this vintage Jerger folding alarm clock combines a rich emerald green case, polished gold-tone trim, and a cream dial with raised gold Arabic numerals. Open the case and it transforms into its own bedside stand; close it again and the entire clock folds into a tidy little square built for the road.
Inside is a traditional 2-jewel mechanical wind-up movement, complete with alarm function. The clock has been tested and is ticking, keeping time, and the alarm is working. Even better, this example still has its original red Jerger retail box, marked 2-060 16, complete with the wonderfully period "Jerger King Time Germany, A German quality product" branding.
📚 Historical Context
Before a hotel room had a digital clock on every nightstand, and decades before a phone could wake you from the other side of the room, somebody actually had to pack an alarm clock.
Enter Jerger.
The Jerger name came out of Niedereschach in Germany's Black Forest clockmaking region, an area where manufacturing tiny gears, springs, balance wheels, and other stubborn little pieces of metal became something of a local specialty. By the mid-20th century, Adolf Jerger's clock factory was producing mechanical alarms and other timepieces, and surviving patents from the period show the company continuing to develop mechanical clock technology through the 1960s and 1970s.
This clock belongs to an era when the travel alarm was genuinely part of the luggage. The green-covered case was not just decoration. Folded shut, it protected the clock. Opened up, the case became its stand. No batteries, no charging cable, no software update. Just wind the spring, set the alarm, and trust a collection of gears to make enough noise in the morning to get you out of bed.
The original King Time box survives here as well, which is especially fun because it preserves the way Jerger marketed these clocks as a German quality product. Similar surviving King Time examples are generally dated around the 1960s into the early 1970s.
