1960s Schmid German 8-Day Mechanical Mantel Clock, Wood Glass Carriage Case

$142.00
A compact German mechanical clock with a surprisingly big presence. This circa-1960s Schmid mantel clock pairs a warm wood case with glass panels, brass-tone framework, a Roman numeral dial, ornate black hands, and a visible pendulum movement.

The dial is signed Schmid and marked 8 day, referring to the movement's original winding design. There are no chimes or alarm to interrupt the show here. This one is all about timekeeping and motion.

And motion it has.

Unlike a tall mantel or wall clock with a long, leisurely pendulum swing, this Schmid uses a short pendulum that moves with a quicker, livelier cadence. The result is a noticeably energetic visual rhythm accompanied by a strong, confident mechanical tick. This is not a whisper-quiet clock, and that is part of its character. You can hear the mechanism working and watch the pendulum keeping pace behind the glass.

📚 Historical Context

Before quartz movements turned clock ownership into a battery-change exercise, somebody had to make a spring, a stack of gears, an escapement, and a pendulum cooperate for days at a time without electricity.

That was Schmid's territory.

W. & A. Schmid-Schlenker was founded by brothers Albert and Walter Schmid in Schwenningen, one of Germany's major clockmaking centers. Production was interrupted during World War II, resumed in 1948, and moved into a new factory in Bad Dürrheim in 1952. By the mid-1950s, Schmid was producing carriage clocks, miniature clocks, anniversary clocks, and other decorative mechanical timepieces. By the end of that decade, the company employed roughly 250 people.

This little clock belongs to that postwar period when German manufacturers were taking the engineering of traditional mechanical clocks and packaging it for the modern home. Instead of hiding everything inside a large wooden cabinet, the glass-sided case puts the machinery on display. The old-world Roman numerals and ornate hands handle the formalities up front while the pendulum, gears, and brasswork do the dirty work behind them.

✨ Condition Notes

- Mechanical movement has been tested and is running.

- Keeps excellent time while running.

- During testing, it will generally run for a couple of days at a time, but may occasionally stop and require a gentle nudge of the pendulum to begin running again.

- Because of that intermittent behavior, it is not being represented as freshly serviced.

- No alarm and no chime. This is a time-only mechanical clock.

- Strong, clearly audible mechanical ticking.

- Short pendulum has a quicker visual swing than a traditional long-pendulum clock, giving the clock a lively mechanical presence.

- Dial is clean and attractive with black Roman numerals, ornate hands, a brushed gold center, the Schmid signature, and an “8 day” marking.

- Wood case shows light surface wear consistent with age.

- Brass-tone framework shows age-related patina, spotting, and oxidation, particularly along the vertical posts.

- Glass panels remain intact and display the movement well.

- Rear movement and winding hardware are present.
