1970s Delfts Holland Hand-Painted Ceramic Clock
$92.00
sold out
A wonderfully Dutch little mantel clock with a surprisingly grand presence. This vintage ceramic clock body was hand-painted in Holland with deep cobalt-blue florals, scrolling borders, and traditional Delft-inspired ornament against a creamy white ground. Its gently arched mantel silhouette is decorated all the way around, so even the sides carry their own painted floral details.
The original clock insert was no longer present when this piece was acquired, so the vintage ceramic body has been thoughtfully fitted with a new battery-operated quartz clock insert featuring a polished gold-tone bezel, crisp white dial, black Roman numerals, and black hands. The understated dial lets all that blue-and-white handiwork remain the star.
The new movement has been tested: the clock ticks and keeps time.
📚 Historical Context
Long before blue-and-white pottery found itself decorating hutches, kitchens, and grandmother’s best shelf, Delft had already made the combination famous.
Beginning centuries ago, Dutch potters developed their own blue-and-white earthenware in response to the costly imported Asian porcelain arriving through Dutch trade. The look stuck. And it stuck hard.
By the middle of the 20th century, workshops throughout the Netherlands were still producing pottery inspired by historic Delft decoration, only now it was being turned into everything from vases and tiles to ashtrays, souvenir shoes, and, eventually, little clocks like this one. The result was traditional decoration made for the modern home: old-world cobalt flowers wrapped around a piece designed to sit comfortably on a mantel or bookshelf.
This example is marked “Delfts Holland – HANDPAINTED” underneath, along with a small painted artisan or workshop mark. The specific pottery has not been positively identified, so I would rather leave the maker unnamed than turn a little blue squiggle into a company it may never have belonged to.
That “Delfts” wording is important. On later Dutch pottery, it commonly identifies decoration in the Delft tradition and does not automatically mean the piece was manufactured by Royal Delft or even within the city of Delft itself. Similar hand-painted Dutch Delft-style ceramics were produced by several workshops throughout the country during the postwar decades.
What survived is the part that mattered most: someone still had to sit down with cobalt pigment and put those flowers there.
