1990s Russian Yantar Frying Pan Wall Clock, Strawberry Folk Art Quartz

$122.00
sold out
A wonderfully unusual 1990s Russian Yantar wall clock shaped like an oversized frying pan, finished in glossy black and warm gold with cheerful strawberry-and-floral folk-art decoration running down the handle.

The circular gold-tone dial is every bit as distinctive, with bold black Roman numeral markers, an eye-catching red XII, ornate black hands, a long red seconds hand, and swirling floral artwork across the center. It's wonderfully strange, wonderfully decorative, and feels right at home in a retro kitchen, eclectic gallery wall, or collection of unusual vintage clocks.

This clock is quartz-driven and battery operated. It has been tested, ticks, and keeps time. The battery shown in testing photos will be removed before shipping.

The listing video is silent by default because Etsy does not play audio with listing videos, even though the clock is operating as it should.

📚 Historical Context

Long before this frying pan was keeping time on somebody's kitchen wall, there was the Oryol Watch Factory: a massive clock-making operation in the Russian city of Oryol.

The factory began production in the early 1950s and eventually became one of the Soviet Union's major producers of household clocks. By 1990 it was producing millions of clocks annually in scores of different designs. And apparently simply making something round with numbers on it wasn't enough. Yantar became known for decorative cases, unusual forms, and even hand-decorated clocks drawing inspiration from traditional Khokhloma and Palekh folk-art styles.

Then the Soviet Union disappeared, Russia changed around it, and Yantar kept building clocks. The company was privatized in 1992 and continued producing both mechanical and quartz clocks during the following decade. This particular example bears “СДЕЛАНО В РОССИИ” — “Made in Russia” on its dial, placing it firmly in that post-Soviet chapter of the factory's story.

And somewhere along the way, somebody at Yantar looked at a frying pan, looked at a wall clock, added strawberries, and decided the three clearly belonged together.

They weren't wrong.
