Vintage Mr. Christmas Animated Train Pocket Watch Music Box Clock

$42.00
At first glance, it looks like an enormous old-fashioned pocket watch. Press the side button, lift the lid, and there’s an entire little Christmas railroad hiding inside.

This vintage Mr. Christmas clock features a weighty gold-tone metal case with an ornate raised border and nostalgic winter scene on the lid. Inside is a white Roman-numeral clock surrounded by a snowy miniature railway, complete with tiny buildings and an animated train that travels around the dial while the wind-up music box plays.

The central clock and the musical animation are separate mechanisms. The clock ticks and kept time during testing, although the second hand intermittently catches and sticks. The wind-up music box plays and the train travels around the track, although the train occasionally gives a brief half-second hesitation as it makes its way around. The music mechanism itself performs more consistently.

This is not an alarm clock. There is no alarm setting or automatic time-based activation for the music or train.

📚 Historical Context

Mr. Christmas is an American, third-generation family-run company founded by Merril Hermanson in 1933. It started with Hermanson building Christmas window displays for local businesses and selling tinsel from the bed of his truck, then grew into a company specializing in animated, musical, and illuminated holiday decorations.

And this is where things get mechanically interesting.

By the 2000s, Mr. Christmas had taken the old department-store holiday window idea and shrunk it down until the gears, trains, music, and scenery could sit in the palm of your hand. Around 2005 came this oversized pocket-watch concept: part clock, part music box, part miniature railroad, with a spring-driven animation mechanism packed beneath a dial barely a few inches across. Period hobby catalogs later advertised the Mr. Christmas train pocket watch as a 3¼-inch metal-cased piece with a working clock and wind-up musical train animation.

It is wonderfully excessive engineering for something whose primary job is telling you the time while a tiny train does laps in the snow.
